Backflow prevention assemblies protect potable water supplies from reverse flow that could introduce contaminants or unwanted water into the drinking-water system. When an assembly begins leaking heavily, fails internally, discharges continuously, or interrupts water service, emergency repair may be needed.

A backflow preventer should not be bypassed or disabled simply because it is leaking; the device exists to protect the potable water system.
