Clogged Shower Drain

Clogged Shower Drain

If your shower is draining slowly or backing up completely leaving you with standing pools of dirty water, call in a plumber to help.

Causes of a Clogged Shower Drain

There are few worse places for a clogged drain than a shower, since this is an appliance that most people use daily. The experienced team at GM Plumbing is ready to assist you in the Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Orange County area.

Since showers are used so often, they are particularly prone to clogging. You may wonder how a shower can get clogged since the purpose of a shower is to get clean. But all that dirt, hair, and grease has to go somewhere, and in unfortunate circumstances, it builds up in your drain and causes a backup.

The following can be potential causes of a clogged shower drain:

If multiple drains in your home are backing up, and especially if activity in one drain seems to affect the other (ie. flushing the toilet makes water come out of the sink), then you likely have a major blockage in your main line and should call a professional immediately.

Methods for Unclogging a Shower Drain

Shower drains can be unclogged using many of the methods that work for other drains. You can try some of these steps yourself with the right tools. At any point, though, you can call a plumber if the job is proving too much for you to handle alone.

If the problem is simply a soapy clump of tangled hair, it’s possible to pull it out with your fingers. To prevent this problem from recurring in the future, put a cover or strainer over your drain to catch hairs and clean it regularly.

One simple method is to gradually pour boiling water down your drain. This is a good idea to do regularly, once a week or once a month, to keep your pipes clean. Do not use this method if you have PVC pipes, which can melt due to the heat.

If this doesn’t work, you can try a mixture of vinegar and baking soda, use a plunger to force water down the drain, or feed a plumber’s snake down the pipe to pick up debris and remove it. Be careful with using chemical cleaners, as they can damage your pipes and don’t usually work on complete clogs.

Your GM Plumbing team will tackle shower clogs with all these methods and more. Call us if you’re ever in need of prompt plumbing service.
